With no one picking a possible Super Bowl winner, Matthew has won his second title (thanks to the Cardinals)!

The only thing left to settle is 4th and 5th place. So, if you need something to root for in the Super Bowl, less than 44 points helps Linda and more than 44 points helps Gloria.

Enjoy the game!

I don't know if you noticed, but the last three members alive in the playoff pool were the top three in our week 1 survey question:

Which title-less member would you most like to see win one this year?

Base: Total Votes 10

2 ( 20%) Ruby
0 ( 0%) Garnet
4 ( 40%) Gold
3 ( 30%) Granite
1 ( 10%) Sapphire

And now with 2 members left alive in the playoff pool, we are left with the top 2.

You'll be happy to know there is no chance for Larch to win yet another title. But the new champ could be determined as early as next week.

Here are the members who can win:

Ash needs PIT over SEA in the Super Bowl.
Oak needs PIT and CAR in the Super Bowl.
Palm needs SEA to win the Super Bowl.
Poplar needs DEN and CAR in the Super Bowl or DEN to win the Super Bowl.

Yew was allowed to change STL to DAL since the request was made before the kickoff of the game. Unfortunately, the change turned out to be a mistake as it cost her the second half title. That has got to hurt! I bet Jughead would like that story.

This is the FINAL WEEK of the regular season and your last chance to claim the 2nd Half and Overall titles!

Don't forget to pick the total points as a tie-breaker.

Don't forget to get the 2 SATURDAY games in early.

Shortly after I said that no team with more than five losses has made it to the Super Bowl, I found out who did. One team won the Super Bowl at 10-6 and one team lost the Super Bowl at 9-7. They both came from the NFC West as division winners. The Los Angeles Rams won the NFC Championship with the worst regular season record but lost to the Steelers in the Super Bowl.

Don't forget to turn in your 3 SATURDAY games early this week!

The answer to this week's trivia is the Vikings. Current Vikings QB Brad Johnson played with MIN in 1997 and caught the only reception of his career, a touchdown. On the 3 yard line, Brad attempted a quick slant which was batted back to him for the catch, and he scrambled 3 yards for the only TD reception thrown to oneself in NFL history. That is a 10.26 point play for those in fantasy football land!

Silver is just trying to make trouble. She has a knack for causing controversy.

I never asked for or expected a prize for being the last to be named this year. As I said, it is an unofficial title and has been in the record books for years (held by Silver by the way). See the Who's Best? link for the public record book that was last updated in February.

I have often thought the last to be named should get to name themselves (which has happened twice, both times by Silver in 1999 and 2001), but I figured I should amend the constitution first.

I guess I will have to win the week if I want to rename myself this year.

It looks like Quartz is trying to get another prize by making up a new "winner" category - naming contest. Well, it won't work (unless the East Coast official Prize Director wants to buy something). . .there are only prizes for the 1st half winner, 2nd half winner, overall winner (ordering 1st at the year-end banquet) and, of course, the Super Bowl winner. You're welcome Holly. . .Holly seemed to be the perfect choice!

For those of you who were confused by the trivia question in week 10, I am allowing you to change your answer. The updated questions reads, "What Super Bowl winner had the most regular season losses?" Any changes must be made before kickoff of the Thanksgiving games.

That loses question was ambigious. Could have been also the Superbowl winner that had the most loses from other Superbowl appearances rather than the most loses in season play then winning the Superbowl.

This week's question was a toughie. Out of the 4 non-division winners (Baltimore, Denver, Kansas City, Oakland) to win the Super Bowl, Oakland (1980) had the most losses: 11-5. However, one division winner (New England) matched that in 2001. No team has even made it to the Super Bowl with more than 5 losses (as far as I can tell).

One member got the question right (besides me)!

In 1985, the Bears were using a defense called the "46". It was designed by defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan and played by safety Gary Fencik (#45) and linebacker Mike Singletary (#50). However, the name was a tribute to former safety Doug Plank (1975-1983) who wore the number 46 and was known for his hard hits and blitzing style.

The 1st half is over! Quartz won the title with a little help from a hurricane (thanks, wilma). Here is the final order of finish (using the tiebreaker):

QUARTZ 1.0
PERIDOT 2.0
SILVER 3.0
PEARL 4.0
JADE 5.0
LILAC 6.0
RUBY 7.0
FIG 8.0
POPLAR 9.0
ASH 10.0
MOONST 11.0
PALM 12.0

Now you have a fresh chance at the 2nd Half title.

Also, Lilac and Pearl had their guesses switched on that page and Ash sent in last minute picks reducing his total from 11 to 9 from those published.

Good afternoon, Mr. Chairman..

There seems to be a discrepency in the pick totals from last week. For example, some members are credited for making picks on 14 games, while others only 13. Does that have something to do with the Friday night game?

Please advise.

Thank you.

Sometimes it pays to pick early. The NFL moved up the KC @ MIA game to Friday night due to hurricane Wilma. Therefore, the Saturday and Sunday picks for that game will earn nothing in accordance with rules 2 and 4 (see below).

Five people got the trivia correct:

"In the initial months following the its formation, the Dallas team was known as the “Steers.” After a few weeks, however, the name was changed to “Rangers.” At the same time, a baseball team operated in Dallas under that name, but was scheduled to fold before the 1960 football season. However, when the baseball team decided to play one more season, Clint Murchison Jr. and Bedford Wynne, two owners of the new NFL team, selected the name of Cowboys to avoid confusion."

Four people got the poll question right. Peter O'Toole played Don Quixote, with Sophia Loren as Aldonza and James Coco as Sancho Panza, in the 1972 film version of the musical. Interestingly enough, Alec Guinness played a descendant of Don Quixote in Monsignor Quixote (1988).

Also, if you haven't noticed already, this year's nickname theme is trees. And this year, the Nickname Beat has moved from mysteries to poems. If you have a favorite tree poem or particular style of poem, let us know and perhaps, we can work it into the rotation.

Three people got the poll question right. The oldest team in the NFL is the Arizona Cardinals, who are actually 14 years older than the state they currently play in!

"...A charter member of the National Football League, the Cardinals trace their history back to the 1898 when Chris O'Brien formed the Morgan Athletic Club. A few years later, he bought used jerseys from the University of Chicago. He described the faded maroon clothing as "Cardinal red" and the team, then playing at 61st and Racine Streets, became the Racine Street Cardinals..."

The next oldest are the Packers (1919), Bears (1920), and then Giants (1925).

Thanks for playing and, as always, you are welcome to send in your own poll questions.

For those of you who are still checking in, I added the last mystery and updated the player files with Garnet and Granite. Thanks for a wonderful year!

This year's playoff winner will be the member who gets the super bowl right (and points in the case of NE), so you will have to check back after the super bowl to find out who wins the title.

Congratulations to Moonstone who won the 2nd half by 3 games! Pearl finished second over Quartz and Peridot finished fourth over Star of the East by the tiebreaker.

In the overall, Quartz gets the gold by winning the tiebreaker, Silver gets the silver (how appropriate), and Pearl get the bronze. Gold did not medal.

Also, the PLAYOFFS begin SATURDAY!!! All 11 picks have to be in before the kickoff of the first wildcard game.

Good Luck

The board of directors has approved a new member for the playoffs. He is the brother of Peridot and will need a nickname. You can help choose his name when you make your playoff picks. Also, Puffin has returned for another another playoff and will need a new name as well. If you chose the ?, then the member will be named by Silver. If both members receive the most votes for the same name, then Puffin is named first.

This is the final week for the 2nd Half and Overall titles. Moonstone leads the 2nd Half by one game and Quartz leads the overall by three games.

Don't forget to pick the total points of the Dal @ NYG game as a tie breaker for the final standings!

The answer to the poll question is Gold or Quartz. Both have been to 5 games. 3 members picked Gold but no one picked Quartz.

Here is the story behind the Star of the East:

After their marriage in 1908, Edward B. McLean and his bride Evalyn travelled to Europe for their honeymoon. When the couple reached Paris, Mrs. McLean was able to buy the wedding present which her father had told her to get. Pierre Cartier showed her the Star of the East, a fine 94.80-carat pear-shaped diamond, mounted on a chain below a hexagonal emerald of 34 carats and a pearl of 32 grains, which may have belonged to the Sultan Abd al-Hamid. After her death, Harry Winston bought the diamond. The Star of the East was displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, in 1978, at a reception marking the 50th anniversary of Harry Winston Inc.

The 1st half final standings have been posted under the Who's Best link.

Most members guessed right about the General Lee's number (01). But if you don't believe me you can look for it in the movie:

"(10/14/04) The lead cast has been officially announced. Johnny Knoxville and Seann William Scott will star as the Duke boys, Jessica Simpson will indeed play Daisy. Just announced today is the news that Boss Hogg's white suit will be filled by Burt Reynolds, and Willie Nelson will be Uncle Jesse.

Based Upon: (9/16/03) This project is the feature film adaptation of the popular action/comedy TV series, The Dukes of Hazzard, which aired on CBS from 1979 to 1985, and has enjoyed a healthy life in cable reruns and syndication ever since.

Filming: (12/4/03) Production is scheduled to start sometime in 2004 for a 2005 release."

Also, one member got half the theme while another member got the theme (with some unnecessary details): Gem & Minerals.

The poll question was a little more difficult as 5 members thought it was 'I want to hold your hand' which went to #1 in 2/64 but has the line, "And when I touch you, I feel happy inside, it's such a feeling that my LOVE I can't hide, I can't hide, I can't hide (head shaking)". 'A hard day's night' went to #1 8/64.

This week we had 4 tie for the best week and, as was the case last week, this is a classic rule 7 issue. So Wormer wins again with a better current overall record.

Most members guessed right about the hurricane names. Here are the retired names:

David (1979): Lesser Antilles, HispaƱola, Florida and Eastern U.S.
Diane (1955§*): Mid-Atlantic U.S. & Northeast U.S.
Gloria (1985*): North Carolina, Northeast U.S.

Although the page popularity ranking may turn out the same - the number of hits could be misleading. The term "hit" is perhaps the most misused term in online marketing, mistakenly used to mean unique visitors, visits, page views, or all of the above. A hit is merely a request for a file from a Web server. A request for a Web page counts as a hit, but so does a request for a graphic on a Web page. Since the number of graphics per page can vary considerably, hits mean very little for comparison purposes. Just FYI.
