VFL NEWS

Vintage Football League II

Sunday July 11, 2004

Hello Football Fans,

I am getting ready to start another fantasy football league for 2004! This year I am making some changes to the Vintage Football League to help the non-Nintendo players have a shot at the title. The major change will be by combining the actual NFL games and the VFL season.

What does this mean to you? You should try to pick the team that is going to win the NFL Super Bowl this year.

The VFL season will still be simulated by the Anderson's Nintendo 64 game system. However, the games will be adjusted to match the outcome of your team's real NFL results (if you choose). Each week, you will make one additional pick (REAL for NFL results and FANTASY for Nintendo results). Your involvement can be as simple as just picking your favorite team and letting the Nintendo game do the rest.

 Here is the schedule:

  • By July 25, 2004 - Pick or change your team (first come, first served)

Optional features:

  • Anytime - Trade or create personalized players

Last year's members are already included in this year's league and do not have to respond unless a change is requested. Members have first right of refusal on their teams from last year.

Sunday August 8, 2004

The VFL preseason starts this week! The preseason is a good time to get to see how the regular season will work. You can go to the home page and practice picking your results or make some trades. The full preseason schedule is listed under the schedule link below the regular season. The first week we only have 4 games (the NFL only has 1 game: 8/9 DEN vs WAS) so picking results this week won't make any difference.

Also, if you are not happy with your team in the preseason, there is still time to change or join before the regular season starts. You can see which teams are owned by going to the standings link on the website. The deadline has been extended for changing teams. Here is the schedule:

  • By September 8, 2004 - change your team (first come, first served)

2004 Preseason - Vintage Power Rankings

  1. Denver (4-0):  They went undefeated in the preseason and have that winning combination of rushing and defense.
  2. New England (4-1):  They handed Dallas their only preseason loss.
  3. Dallas (4-1):  They won the NFC East without an owner last year and look like they have only gotten better.
  4. Da Bears! (3-1):  Their 23 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Jets.  Maybe they aren’t unbeatable after all.
  5. Indianapolis (3-1):  With the decline of the Dolphins, they will have to prove they can beat the Pats to claim the best in the AFC East.
  6. NY Giants (3-1):  The new ownership is already paying dividends.  Look out Cowboys, here comes the Giants!
  7. Green Bay (3-2):  Even with a loss to the Dolphins, they showed that their high-powered offense will be a force this year.
  8. NY Jets (2-2):  It may just be preseason, but a 21 point 4th quarter rally against the defending champions is worth a lot.
  9. Minnesota (1-3):  They have a new owner and an improved offense. Now they just need to learn how to win the close ones.

Week 1

Oakland 34 (1-0) at Kansas City 24* (0-1)
New England 17 (0-1) at Denver 38 (1-0)

  1. Denver (1-0, last week: 1):  They stuffed the run against the Pats and put up the most points for the week.  Now the Cowboys will see if they can run against this defense.
  2. Dallas (1-0, last week: 3):  They had an easy time with the Cardinals, but this week will be a real test to see if they can grab the top spot.
  3. Da Bears! (1-0, last week: 4):  They took care of the Jaguars at home with the week’s best rusher.  Now on to steel country.
  4. NY Giants (1-0, last week: 6):  They earned an early division win against the Redskins in a solid performance.
  5. Green Bay (1-0, last week: 7):  They can still throw the ball well enough to make up for their injured defensive line.
  6. NY Jets (1-0, last week: 8 ):  The defense is for real.  They just pounded the NFC West champions at home.  But can they keep it going?
  7. St. Louis (1-0, last week: unranked):  They have a new owner who can equal their win total from last year with just one more win.
  8. Philadelphia (1-0, last week: unranked):  They have the best defense and best rushing team.  This team could be climbing much higher if they can keep it that way.
  9. Indianapolis (0-1, last week: 5):  Ouch!  Despite having the number one offense, they lose a home game with failures in the defensive passing and special teams game.

Week 2

Baltimore 28 (0-2) at New York Jets 34* (2-0)

  2. Da Bears! (2-0, last week: 3):  They shut out the Steelers and took over the league’s best defense.
  3. NY Giants (2-0, last week: 4):  They survived a close one with the Raiders, but now they’ll have to face an angry Cowboys’ team.
  4. Green Bay (2-0, last week: 5):  They got another injury on the defensive line, but scored enough to beat the Bucs.
  5. NY Jets (2-0, last week: 6):  They ran over the Ravens, but now they will have to face the league’s best offense.
  6. St. Louis (2-0, last week: 7):  They have as many wins as last year and the best passing defense.  Now they just need to stop the run.
  7. Philadelphia (2-0, last week):  They can run the ball and stop the run, which should be plenty to topple the Cardinals this week.
  8. Dallas (1-1, last week: 2):  They weren’t ready to battle for the top spot in the league, and now they will have to fight just to get to the top of their division.
  9. New England (1-1, last week: unranked):  They have the best passing offense and clobbered the Colts with their aerial assault.

Dallas 34 (2-1) at New York Giants 10 (2-1)

  1. Denver (3-0, last week: 1):  They took over the best rushing offense and the best rushing defense as they pummeled the Raiders.
  2. Da Bears! (3-0, last week: 2):  They lost their QB and RB during the game but still had enough firepower to stop the Bucs.
  3. Philadelphia (3-0, last week: 7):  Another strong showing vaults them over 4 teams this week and now they get to face the struggling Chiefs.
  4. NY Giants (2-1, last week: 3):  They couldn’t handle the Cowboys at home, but they should rebound on the road in the next couple of weeks.
  5. Green Bay (2-1, last week: 4):  Their defensive injuries finally caught up with them.  Now we’ll see how they handle a rested Panthers’ team.
  6. NY Jets (2-1, last week: 5):  Their defense failed to show up against the Colts, and now they get an extra week to think about it with a bye.
  7. St. Louis (2-1, last week: 6):  They couldn’t break their record for number of wins on the road, but this week they are home again.
  8. Dallas (2-1, last week: 8):  They came up big with a key divisional win to keep pace with the Eagles and Giants, but they still need help on the defensive side.
  9. New England (2-1, last week: 9):  They survived the Titans and now have a week off to figure out how to fix a broken running game.

Week 4

Arizona 14 (0-4) at St. Louis 24* (3-1)

Cincinnati 20 (2-2) at Baltimore 23 (1-3)
Tampa Bay 30 (2-2) at Detroit 17 (2-2)

  1. Denver (4-0, last week: 1):  They just keep on running over everyone, but this week they will have to face the unbeaten Eagles.
  2. Da Bears! (4-0, last week: 2):  They matched the Broncos for most points this week, but got a little careless on defense.
  3. Philadelphia (4-0, last week: 3):  They remained as one of the four undefeated teams by dispatching the Chiefs, but now they have to face the number one ranked Broncos in hostile territory.
  4. NY Giants (3-1, last week: 4):  They are keeping pace with the high-flying Eagles and could pull back into a tie with them this week.
  5. Green Bay (3-1, last week: 5):  They survived the Panthers with a beat-up defense, and this week they face the struggling Vikings.
  6. St. Louis (3-1, last week: 7):  They moved up the ladder with the Jets on a bye, but they get a bye this week and could move back down again.
  7. Dallas (3-1, last week: 8 ):  If you can throw the ball as well as the Cowboys, who needs to play defense?
  8. NY Jets (2-1, last week: 6):  They lost ground in the rankings with a bye, but maybe the rest will be just what they need to knock off the Dolphins.
  9. New England (2-1, last week: 9):  They didn’t do anything with their week off, and they will probably still beat the Saints.

Week 5

Carolina 33 (1-3) at Atlanta 30 (1-3)
Dallas 10* (3-2) at Washington 26 (1-4)
Detroit 23 (2-3) at Chicago 45 (5-0)

  2. Da Bears! (5-0, last week: 2):  They finally outscored the Broncos by clobbering the Lions and now get to face the winless Cardinals.
  3. NY Giants (4-1, last week: 4):  They pulled even with the Eagles with an impressive defensive performance against the Bucs.
  4. Philadelphia (4-1, last week: 3):  They got run over by the Broncos and fell from the ranks of the unbeaten, but they should rebound against the Redskins this week.
  5. NY Jets (3-1, last week: 8):  They narrowly escaped with a win against the unbeaten Dolphins and pulled into a tie for their division lead.
  6. St. Louis (3-1, last week: 6):  They didn’t play this weekend and didn’t lose any ground in the rankings, but they’ll need the rest to ground the high-flying Jets this week.
  7. New England (3-1, last week: 9):  They dispatched the Saints with relative ease, but they better not overlook the winless Chiefs this week.
  8. Green Bay (3-2, last week: 5):  They couldn’t stop the Vikings running game and will need this week’s bye to fix their Swiss cheese defensive line.
  9. Dallas (3-2, last week: 7):  They should have chosen a different game plan as they were shocked by the winless Redskins.

Week 6

Buffalo 23 (2-3) at Indianapolis 27 (4-2)
Carolina 24 (2-3) at Dallas 17 (3-3)
Kansas City 9 (0-6) at New England 20 (4-1)

  1. Denver (6-0, last week: 1):  They have earned a week off with the league’s best rushing offense and rushing defense.
  2. Da Bears! (6-0, last week: 2):  They killed the Cardinals with the league’s best passing attack and the #1 defense.
  3. Philadelphia (5-1, last week: 4):  They are back on the winning track and took over the top spot in their division.
  4. St. Louis (4-1, last week: 6):  They won a game that was closer then the 15-14 score would indicate, but it doesn’t get any easier with a trip to the 4-1 Dolphins.
  5. New England (4-1, last week: 7):  They had another solid passing game to beat the Chiefs, but this week they face a division rival.
  6. NY Giants (4-2, last week: 3):  They lost another game at home but are still unbeaten on the road, and this week could be trouble as they play the Cardinals at home.
  7. Indianapolis (4-2, last week: unranked):  They are on a roll with 4 straight wins, but the 49ers could spell trouble for the streak.
  8. NY Jets (3-2, last week: 5):  They have had a rough schedule with the Dolphins and then the Rams, but it doesn’t get any easier as they have to go on the road against the 4-1 Pats.
  9. Green Bay (3-2, last week: 8):  They had a week to prepare for the Lions this week, and should have an easy win with the league’s best passing defense.

Arizona 28 (1-6) at New York Giants 13* (4-3)

New York Jets 34 (3-3) at New England 37 (5-1)

  1. Da Bears! (7-0, last week: 2):  The #1 offense and the #1 defense has helped them to the best record in the league and a new home atop the rankings.
  2. Denver (6-0, last week: 1):  They lost the top stop in the rankings during the bye week, but here is betting they haven’t lost their winning ways.
  3. Philadelphia (6-1, last week: 3):  They have gained a 2 game lead in their division and earned a week of rest.
  4. New England (5-1, last week: 5):  They survived a close one with the Jets and now can take over their division by beating the Dolphins.
  5. St. Louis (4-2, last week: 4):  Their loss to the Dolphins put them behind in their division, but a win this week would put them right back into first.
  6. NY Giants (4-3, last week: 6):  All three of their losses have come at home, but the schedule is in their favor as they get a bye and 2 straight road games.
  7. Indianapolis (4-3, last week: 7):  How do you spell trouble? 4-9-e-r-s.
  8. NY Jets (3-3, last week: 8):  A couple of close losses have knocked them back to .500, but can they rebound against the Falcons?
  9. Green Bay (3-3, last week: 9):  Ouch, they weren’t as good at preparing as the Lions were and limp home to face the Ravens.

  3. Philadelphia (6-1, last week: 3):  They are coming off their bye week with a crucial game against the Cowboys at home this week.
  4. New England (6-1, last week: 4):  They took control of their division by beating the Dolphins on the road, and now they have to face another division rival on the road with the Colts.
  5. St. Louis (4-3, last week: 5):  They couldn’t handle the 49ers at home and now have to go on the road for the next three weeks.
  6. NY Giants (4-3, last week: 6):  They are coming off a bye and looking to break a two game losing streak by beating the Redskins.
  7. Indianapolis (4-3, last week: 7):  They had a week to prepare for the Pats in what could be a must win game.
  8. NY Jets (4-3, last week: 8):  They came up big against the Falcons, but will have to look out for the upset-minded Chiefs.
  9. Green Bay (4-3, last week: 9):  They defended their home turf against the Ravens, but now have to do the same against the streaking 49ers.

Dallas 20 (3-5) at Philadelphia 27 (7-1)

  1. Da Bears! (8-0, last week: 1):  They lost the best offense during their week off, but they should be able to pick up some rushing yards this week against the 26th ranked Rams.
  2. Denver (8-0, last week: 2):  They think they can impress the pollsters by running up the score, but this isn’t college fellas.
  3. Philadelphia (7-1, last week: 3):  They took care of the Cowboys this week and have built a three game lead in their division.
  4. New England (6-2, last week: 4):  They lost a close one to the Colts and now have both the Dolphins and Colts nipping at their heels.
  5. St. Louis (5-3, last week: 5):  They survived on the road against the Falcons, but do they have enough to stop the Bears’ unbeaten streak?
  6. Indianapolis (5-3, last week: 7):  They just took care of one division foe, but they still have three more to come in the next three weeks in the most competitive division.
  7. NY Giants (4-4, last week: 6):  They have now lost three games in a row, but something has to give this week as they face the struggling Cowboys who have lost four in a row.
  8. NY Jets (4-4, last week: 8):  They were upset by the Chiefs and sent to the bottom of their division, but the good news is that they are still only two games from first.
  9. Green Bay (4-4, last week: 9):  They took a tough loss at home from the 49ers and now are outside looking in at the playoffs.
